Thinkific Start Annual vs Monthly: Save $330 or Keep Flexibility?
The short answer
Thinkific Start currently costs **US$109 month to month** or **US$978 for one year paid in advance**. Twelve monthly payments total **US$1,308**, so annual billing saves **US$330** before tax and extras. The annual plan becomes cheaper only when you expect to reach the **ninth monthly payment**.

Quick verdict
Choose **monthly Start** while demand, launch timing or course-market fit is uncertain. Choose **annual Start** after a real trial proves the platform and you expect at least nine months of paid use.
This guide holds the Start feature set constant. It does not repeat Toolnavia's existing Start-versus-Basic tier article. The decision here is cash commitment, renewal and exit risk—not whether Start's memberships, payment plans or learning tools justify upgrading from Basic.
Use the exact annual invoice
Thinkific's pricing page shows **US$82/month billed annually** and “Save US$330.” Multiplying the rounded display gives US$984, which looks inconsistent. The official 2026 pricing-update table resolves it: the exact new Start annual price is **US$978**, an effective **US$81.50/month**.
The fair comparison is therefore US$109 × 12 = US$1,308 against US$978 paid once. The exact saving is US$330, or about **25.2%** of the monthly path. Do not use US$984 as the invoice assumption.
Taxes, promotions, currency, add-ons, overages and payment-processing choices can change the total. Save the checkout invoice before purchase.
The ninth-payment crossover
Eight monthly payments cost **US$872**, still US$106 below the annual invoice. Nine payments cost **US$981**, US$3 above annual. This makes month nine the base-price crossover.
Monthly is cheaper if you stop during months one through eight. Annual is cheaper if use reaches months nine through twelve, assuming the displayed prices remain applicable and no refund or tax difference changes the model.
The annual saving is meaningful, but only after product fit is proven. A delayed launch can erase the economic advantage: three unused annual months represent US$244.50 of the effective annual cost.
Same plan, different cash exposure
Both cadences buy Start. Current Start includes unlimited courses, live cohorts and coaching, memberships and subscriptions, payment plans, custom domain support, quizzes, assignments and certificates.
Monthly keeps US$978 from leaving at once and makes the next cancellation boundary one month away. Annual converts the discount into a full-year prepaid commitment. It works best when content, audience and launch operations already exist.
Use the free trial to test course import, checkout, memberships, email flow, student access, live-session workflow and the exact payment gateway. A polished demo is not enough; run one end-to-end paid-offer rehearsal before prepaying.
Cancellation is not a general refund
Thinkific says you may cancel from Account Management. Cancellation prevents future subscription payments, while paid-plan access generally continues until the current billing cycle ends; add-ons can end immediately.
Current terms say subscriptions are billed in advance and Thinkific generally does not provide refunds unless Thinkific made an error or the agreement or applicable law requires one. The 2026 update mentions a possible prorated annual refund after renewal only where the customer's jurisdiction requires it.
Treat annual cancellation as **stopping the next renewal**, not recovering unused months. Monthly is the safer cadence when an early shutdown, delayed launch or strategy change is plausible.
Before canceling, remove or plan for custom-domain changes, recurring student charges, data access and add-ons. Canceling the platform does not automatically stop every student subscription.
Renewal and price-change risk
Paid plans automatically renew at the then-current price unless canceled before renewal. Thinkific says annual customers receive an email **30–60 days** before renewal with the renewal date, applicable price and cancellation instructions.
The August 13, 2026 increase moved Start from US$99 to US$109 monthly and from US$888 to US$978 annually. Existing annual customers pay the new price at the first renewal on or after that date; discounted and nonprofit accounts may differ.
Annual buyers should save the renewal date and set reminders at 60, 45 and 30 days. Re-check current pricing and export the renewal notice; do not assume the first-year amount will repeat.
Which cadence fits?
Monthly fits a new course, uncertain audience, delayed launch risk, short validation project or any buyer who values an eight-month exit option more than the US$330 full-year saving.
Annual fits an operating course business with verified Start-level needs, stable payment infrastructure, at least nine months of expected use and enough cash to prepay without harming launch or marketing spend.
Before paying, confirm **Thinkific Start**, USD market, billing cadence, exact first invoice, taxes, payment-gateway charges, add-ons, renewal date, then-current renewal price, cancellation steps and refund jurisdiction.
