Thinkific Start vs Basic: $978 vs $475/Year—Is the Extra $503 Worth It?
The short answer
Thinkific Start is not automatically the better plan just because it unlocks more selling tools. The current official 2026 pricing shows Basic at $54 month-to-month and Start at $109 month-to-month; on annual billing, Thinkific’s support page gives exact totals of $475 for Basic and $978 for Start, a $503 yearly gap. The pricing page also shows rounded annual-equivalent figures of $40 and $82 per month, so use the exact annual totals rather than multiplying the rounded display by 12. Start makes the strongest case when you need memberships, payment plans, certificates, assignments, live cohorts, or when you use a third-party payment gateway at enough volume for Start’s lower gateway fee to matter.

Start costs $503 more a year—what changes?
Basic already covers unlimited courses, one community, a custom domain, core commerce tools, and limited quantities of coaching/webinar sessions and digital downloads. Start adds a much broader selling and engagement layer: memberships and subscriptions, payment plans, completion certificates, assignments and quizzes, bundles and upsells, live cohorts, plus unlimited coaching/webinar sessions and bookable calendars. If those are central to how you sell or deliver learning, the upgrade is easy to explain. If you mainly sell straightforward self-paced courses, Basic can remain the cleaner value choice.
The payment-gateway math can matter
Thinkific’s current cost documentation says customers using Stripe or another third-party payment provider can face an additional Thinkific gateway fee of 5% on Basic and 2% on Start. Grow is listed at 1%. Customers using Thinkific Payments do not incur that third-party gateway fee. On the $503 annual Basic-to-Start plan gap, the three-percentage-point fee difference alone breaks even at roughly $16,767 of yearly third-party-gateway sales. That is only a planning illustration: it ignores taxes, processor charges, refunds and every Start feature, and it does not apply when Thinkific Payments removes this fee.
Four reasons Start can earn its price
First, memberships and subscriptions let a creator sell recurring access instead of only one-off course purchases. Second, payment plans, bundles and upsells give more ways to structure higher-value offers. Third, certificates, assignments, quizzes and live cohorts add delivery options that matter for structured programs rather than simple video libraries. Fourth, Start removes Basic’s small caps on coaching/webinar sessions and digital downloads, which can reduce plan friction for creators mixing courses with services or downloadable products. Each benefit is workload-dependent: paying for Start makes less sense if you will not use the features that actually change your offer.
When Basic is the better buy
Basic is the more disciplined choice when your business is mostly self-paced courses, you do not need memberships or payment plans, and the five included coaching/webinar sessions and five digital downloads are enough. It can also remain cheaper for businesses using Thinkific Payments, because the 5%-versus-2% third-party-gateway comparison then stops being a reason to upgrade. Thinkific says taxes may apply and payment-processing costs vary, so final checkout and effective selling costs should be verified for your country and payment setup before committing.
Use the 30-day trial as a decision test
Thinkific currently advertises a 30-day free trial rather than a permanent free plan. Build one representative course, then test the exact Start-only feature you think justifies the extra $503 per year: a membership, a payment plan, a certificate workflow, a live cohort, or your preferred payment setup. If Basic handles the real workflow, keep the lower plan. If Start removes a concrete selling or delivery constraint, the upgrade has a measurable reason.
Thinkific also runs an official affiliate program through PartnerStack. Its affiliate page states a 30% lifetime recurring commission on paid monthly and annual plans, a 90-day cookie, and cash-out via PayPal or Stripe; a live PartnerStack application route is available. Toolnavia has not applied or been approved for this program, so affiliate tracking and paid referral CTAs remain disabled until real approval is recorded.
