Shopify Grow Annual vs Monthly: When Does $948 Upfront Win?

The short answer

Shopify Grow now presents a clear cash-flow choice for a US store. The current official US result lists **$105 when paid month to month** and **$79 per month when billed yearly**. The annual number is not a $79 monthly charge. Shopify says annual billing takes the whole year upfront, so the real comparison is **$105 today and every month** versus **$948 today for twelve months**.

That creates a $312 nominal saving over twelve months, but moves $843 of future payments into the first invoice. Nine monthly payments cost $945, still $3 less than the annual prepayment. Ten monthly payments cost $1,050, so annual billing only becomes cheaper in cumulative cash at the tenth monthly charge.

Quick verdict

Choose monthly billing while the store is proving demand, when $948 upfront would strain working capital, or when there is a real chance of leaving Shopify before the tenth paid month.

Choose annual billing when Grow is already the settled platform, twelve months are funded, and saving $312 is worth giving up liquidity. Treat the charge as a prepaid commitment, not a flexible $79 monthly subscription.

Put both options on one timeline

- Monthly: $105 × 12 = **$1,260**. - Annual: $79 × 12 = **$948 upfront**. - Twelve-month saving: **$312**, about **24.8%**. - Nine monthly charges: **$945**. - Ten monthly charges: **$1,050**.

The crossover is a decision boundary, not instant savings. Up to nine paid months, monthly billing uses less cash. At the tenth invoice, annual becomes lower. This excludes taxes, credits and promotions.

The discount trades liquidity for commitment

Paying $948 removes $843 more cash on day one than the first monthly invoice. That money could fund inventory, advertising tests, returns, tax or a contractor. An established store may accept the trade; an unproven store may value the option to stop more than the headline saving.

Before prepaying, reserve three months of inventory and operating cash, keep chargeback and tax funds separate, and verify that the annual invoice will not delay those obligations. Revenue alone is not enough: a store can sell well and still be cash-poor because stock and advertising consume funds.

Cancellation does not undo prepayment

Shopify describes plans as prepaid. Annual billing is charged in full upfront, and deactivation normally ends access at the close of the paid cycle. The refund policy offers limited review windows; it is not a general promise of prorated refunds whenever a merchant changes direction.

Monthly billing limits the next commitment to the next cycle. Annual billing locks the lower rate but exposes more prepaid cash. Closing after several months does not automatically convert unused months back into cash. Paid apps can also have separate cancellation rules. Record the renewal owner and date, review each app, export needed data, and keep the invoice and dated terms.

Plan savings are not total Shopify savings

The $312 difference covers only Grow. It excludes apps, premium themes, POS Pro, domains, taxes, payment processing, third-party transaction fees, shipping and development. Current independent guides repeatedly warn that these items can exceed the plan difference.

Maintain two budgets: committed platform cash for Shopify and annual tools, and variable operating cash for apps, advertising, fees, shipping and contractors. Annual billing only works when the committed budget remains safe.

Use monthly billing to buy information

For a new or migrating store, the first monthly cycles should confirm that Grow is the right tier, the staff accounts and economics are actually used, the app stack is stable, and no platform blocker will force a migration. Once those facts are stable and the store is likely to reach the tenth paid month, annual billing becomes a rational cost reduction.

Existing Toolnavia coverage compares Grow with Basic. This article does not repeat that tier decision. It assumes Grow is selected and asks only how to fund the same plan.

**Country and price conflict.**

An earlier localized Shopify capture showed lower USD figures, while the current explicit US official result and multiple current US sources show $105 monthly and $79 annually. The difference reflects country-sensitive presentation and a recent US update; averaging the figures would be misleading.

Every calculation here is restricted to the US pair. Buyers elsewhere should repeat the method with their own checkout currency. Never combine one market's monthly price with another market's annual price.

**Decision checklist.**

Choose monthly if the store may leave within nine paid months, day-one liquidity matters, or plan and app fit remain uncertain.

Choose annual if Grow is stable, the store expects at least ten paid months, $948 does not reduce operating reserves, and someone owns renewal and app review.

Final recommendation

For an unproven store, start monthly. The first nine payments cost no more than the annual prepayment and preserve flexibility. For an established store committed to Grow for a full year, annual is the lower total: $948 instead of $1,260.

Verify the current US checkout, renewal date and refund terms before paying. The deciding question is not whether 24.8% sounds attractive; it is whether the business can safely prepay $948 and is sufficiently certain to reach the tenth monthly invoice.
