Easy Digital Downloads Extended vs Personal: When Does 0% Beat 3%?

The short answer

Easy Digital Downloads Personal has a regular annual price of $199 and Extended is $399, so the long-term license gap is $200 per year. The larger difference is transactional: EDD's current documentation says Personal adds a 3% EDD platform fee to Stripe transactions, while Extended and higher plans reduce that EDD fee to 0%. On fee math alone, $200 divided by 3% is about $6,667 in annual eligible Stripe sales, or roughly $556 per month. That calculation compares only the EDD platform fee; Stripe's own processing fee remains separate.

Use regular prices for the long-term decision

EDD currently displays promotional first-year prices that can vary by campaign and timing, while its published regular prices are $199 for Personal and $399 for Extended. Recent official and third-party snapshots have shown different introductory discounts, which is why a durable buying decision should be based on the regular $200 annual gap rather than assuming today's promotion will repeat. Before paying, verify the live cart, but budget renewal using the regular plan prices shown by EDD.

The 3% fee creates a clear break-even

EDD's May 2026 fee guide says the free version and Personal add a 3% platform fee on Stripe transactions; Extended or higher removes that EDD fee. Its Stripe integration page repeats the same table: Free 3%, Personal 3%, Extended/Professional/All Access 0%. At $1,000 per month in eligible Stripe sales, a 3% EDD fee is $30 per month or $360 per year. At $2,000 per month, it is $720 per year. EDD publishes those same scale examples. Once the fee savings are larger than the license premium, Extended can be cheaper even before valuing extra features.

Extended also adds payment and store features

Personal already includes unlimited products, checkout/cart, Elementor integration, subscriptions and free trials, Stripe, PayPal and Apple Pay, discount codes, EU VAT support, AI recommendations, abandoned-cart recovery and revenue reporting. Extended adds no EDD platform fees, Authorize.net and 2Checkout, multi-currency support, content restriction, product bundles, customer reviews and Zapier integration. Those additions can justify Extended before the pure fee break-even if the store needs them operationally.

Stripe processing does not become free

The 0% claim refers to the EDD platform fee, not Stripe's payment-processing cost. EDD's current guide explicitly separates its 3% platform fee from Stripe's standard card-processing fee and says upgrading removes only the EDD layer. This distinction prevents a misleading conclusion: Extended can eliminate EDD's extra percentage, but payment processors can still charge their own rates. ACH or other methods can have different processor economics, but those are separate from the Personal-versus-Extended plan choice.

The affiliate program is open, but the current rate is not public

Easy Digital Downloads has a live affiliate registration form and a current affiliate agreement that says approved affiliates receive commissions on referred memberships and products. The same agreement states that commission rates are confidential, applications may be approved or rejected, commissions are paid monthly, and only a customer's first new order is commissionable under the current terms. Toolnavia has not applied or been approved, so affiliate tracking remains disabled and this article does not invent a public commission percentage.

The buying rule is practical: if regular annual pricing is the reference, Personal's 3% EDD platform fee catches up with Extended's $200 license premium at about $6,667 in yearly eligible Stripe sales. Below that level, Personal can remain cheaper if its feature set is enough. Above it, Extended can make financial sense even before counting multi-currency, bundles, reviews, Zapier or additional gateways.
