Shopify Grow vs Basic: Are 5 Staff and Lower Fees Worth $600/Year?

The short answer

Shopify Grow is $79 per month on annual billing versus $29 for Basic, so a US store pays $948 versus $348 over a year—a $600 gap. Both plans include the core online store, unlimited products, hosting, SSL, Shopify Markets, Sidekick and other shared commerce features. The main reasons to move to Grow are operational: up to five staff accounts, a lower standard online card rate of 2.7% + 30¢ instead of 2.9% + 30¢, and a 1% third-party transaction fee instead of 2%. If you run the store alone and use Shopify Payments at modest volume, Basic often remains the cleaner buy.

The $600 annual gap needs a real business reason

On yearly billing, the plan-price difference is $50 per month. On monthly billing, Basic is $39 and Grow is $105, a $66 monthly gap. Grow is therefore not a minor upgrade if the extra features sit unused. The first question is whether your store needs staff access. Basic has no additional staff accounts, while Grow includes up to five. A founder who can run the store alone gets no direct value from that difference; a small team may need it before payment-rate savings matter.

Lower Shopify Payments rates have a measurable break-even

For standard US online cards, Shopify currently lists 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic and 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow. The fixed 30¢ portion is the same, so the rate gap is 0.2 percentage points. Using the $50 monthly plan gap on annual billing, the lower percentage alone offsets that gap at roughly $25,000 per month in eligible card sales. That is a planning calculation, not a promise: card mix, international or premium cards, refunds, taxes and other payment rules can change the result. Shopify says exact payment costs vary by plan and market.

A third-party payment provider changes the math faster

Shopify's US pricing table lists third-party transaction fees of 2% on Basic and 1% on Grow. Shopify's help center explains that these fees can apply when transactions are processed through an outside provider and are charged in addition to that provider's own processing fees. Shopify Payments transactions do not incur these third-party transaction fees when Shopify Payments is used as the applicable processor. At a one-percentage-point difference, $5,000 per month of sales subject to the fee creates about a $50 fee difference—the same as the annual-billing monthly plan gap. The exact calculation should use your own payment routing, because not every order is necessarily subject to the same fee.

When Basic is still the better plan

Basic already includes the full online store, themes, unlimited products, social and marketplace selling, inventory management, 200+ real-time reports plus custom analytics, abandoned-checkout recovery, hosting and SSL. For a solo operator, those shared features can cover most of the store-management workload. Grow becomes stronger when staff accounts are necessary or when eligible payment volume makes its lower rates meaningful. Advanced is a separate step for larger teams and global operations, so a small store should not jump tiers only because a higher plan exists.

The affiliate program is valuable—but approval is separate

Shopify's official Affiliate Program is free to apply to and is aimed at creators, educators, review sites and content publishers with an active website, an established merchant audience, original commerce content and relevant experience. Shopify currently says qualified referrals to Basic, Grow or Advanced can earn up to $150 USD, with the exact commission determined by the merchant's location. Referrals are tracked for 30 days, and the program is hosted on Impact. Toolnavia has not applied or been approved, so this article does not enable affiliate tracking or present an affiliate CTA as active.

Before upgrading, check two things: whether another employee actually needs a Shopify staff account, and how much monthly payment volume is processed under the rate that would change. If neither is material, stay on Basic. If staff access is required or the fee savings are consistently larger than the $50 monthly annual-billing gap, Grow has a concrete financial or operational reason.
