Verdict

Setapp Membership is easiest to justify when you repeatedly use several paid Mac apps rather than one favorite tool. The current Mac plan costs $14.99 per month plus tax for one Mac, while Setapp's current yearly-value display shows $8.99 per month. New users get a seven-day trial. Treat the yearly figure as a current annual-value display, not a verified auto-renewing invoice total: the direct yearly checkout and future renewal still need to be checked live.

What the Mac plan includes

The current Mac plan covers one Mac and includes access to Setapp's 300+ app catalog plus 1,000 AI credits under today's pricing page. The catalog currently includes apps such as CleanMyMac, CleanShot X, Ulysses, Craft, ClearVPN, Nitro PDF Pro, and many other utilities and productivity tools.

That breadth is the point of the subscription. If you only need one app, Setapp now also exposes Standalone/single-app options in its catalog, so buying one app directly can be the cleaner choice. Membership becomes more compelling when several included apps replace separate recurring or upgrade costs.

Monthly $14.99 or the yearly $8.99/month display?

Setapp's current canonical pricing page lists the Mac plan at $14.99/month plus tax, billed monthly. Its Membership page also advertises "Save up to 40% yearly" and displays $8.99/month in the yearly-value section.

A separate current Setapp gift-card page sells 12 months of Membership for $107.88 plus tax, which is arithmetically consistent with $8.99 × 12. But a gift card is not the same billing object as a direct auto-renewing annual subscription. This guide therefore does not claim $107.88 is the exact direct annual renewal. Confirm the live direct checkout, tax, currency, and future renewal before paying.

The monthly plan costs more per month but is easier to stop if you are still testing whether the catalog replaces enough standalone apps. The yearly route is more attractive only when you expect to keep using multiple included apps for most of the year.

The seven-day trial automatically becomes a paid plan unless canceled

Setapp gives new Membership users a seven-day trial. The default plan is Mac for one Mac, and Setapp says a payment method is required. If you do not cancel or change the plan before the trial ends, the selected/default billing period is charged.

Use the trial deliberately: install two or three apps you would actually pay for, complete representative tasks, and decide whether they replace existing subscriptions. These are proposed acceptance checks, not Toolnavia measurements of app quality or reliability.

Setapp's older Help pages still contain stale commercial numbers such as "from $9.99/month," "260+ apps," and a 10% annual-saving example. Today's canonical pricing and Membership pages instead show $14.99/month for Mac, 300+ apps, and savings up to 40% yearly. For current purchase decisions, this article uses the fresher canonical pages and treats the older Help figures as lagging documentation.

Refunds are much stricter than a 30-day use-and-return promise

For a Membership refund request, Setapp says you must first cancel the subscription, submit the request within 30 days after the last payment, and—critically—not have installed or opened any Setapp app during the billing period for which you want the refund. Opening the Setapp desktop itself is allowed.

That means the refund policy is not a general "use the catalog for 30 days and then change your mind" guarantee. Once you have installed or opened an included app during that billing period, Setapp says the refund can be declined. Refund requests also require a support ticket.

Cancellation is separate: after you turn off the subscription, the account remains active through the already-paid billing period. When the account deactivates, installed Setapp apps remain on the Mac but cannot be used through Setapp.

Does the bundle beat buying apps separately?

Current direct prices illustrate why the answer depends on your app mix. CleanShot X Basic is $35 one-time and includes one year of updates, with an optional $19/year update renewal. Ulysses is $39.99/year or $5.99/month. Craft Plus currently shows $6.40/month on yearly billing or $8 monthly. CleanMyMac is also available through Setapp, while MacPaw sells it separately under its own subscription and one-time terms.

These are examples, not a universal break-even calculation. One-time licenses, annual subscriptions, feature differences, update rights, and your actual usage all change the economics. The right question is how many included apps you would otherwise pay for—not how many of the 300+ apps exist in the catalog.

Next step

Start the seven-day trial and choose a small real app stack: for example, one maintenance app, one capture tool, and one writing or productivity app. If several of them replace software you already pay for, compare the current $14.99 monthly route with the live yearly checkout. If you only keep opening one app, buy that app directly instead.
