GoodSync Personal 5 Devices: Do VMs & Dual-Boot Installs Count Separately?
The short answer
GoodSync Personal currently starts at $29.95/year for an initial five-device personal license. The important word is “device”: GoodSync's license rules can count OS instances and virtual machines separately, so five physical computers is not always the right mental model.
At a glance
- Best for
- A nonbusiness user who wants to understand whether their real mix of PCs, OS installations and VMs fits inside the initial five-device Personal license.
- Price model
- $29.95/year initial five-device Personal license; storage separate
- Check first
- VMs/OS instances can consume separate slots; Server-computer and business use are excluded.
Three PCs can still be simple
If you have three ordinary laptops or desktops, each with one operating-system installation and no licensed VM use, the five-device allowance leaves comfortable room.
GoodSync itself separates one-way Backup jobs from two-way Synchronize jobs and lets you Analyze proposed actions before running them. That workflow choice is separate from how many installations need licenses.
Dual boot can consume more than one slot
A single physical computer running multiple OS instances can use more than one GoodSync device entitlement. A Windows/Linux dual-boot workstation should therefore be counted by licensed installations, not only by the chassis.
Virtual machines also matter
GoodSync says virtual machines can count separately. A home lab with two physical PCs plus several VMs can exhaust the five-device Personal allowance much faster than expected.
Server computers are a different license
Personal is for eligible nonbusiness use and does not cover Server-computer licensing. A NAS endpoint can be part of a Personal workflow, but running GoodSync on a server-class computer or business deployment can require different licensing.
Storage is separate from device licensing
GoodSync Personal supports local drives, network shares, NAS and cloud endpoints. Optional GoodSync Storage is a separate purchase, so five licensed devices does not include a fixed cloud-storage allowance.
Count the deployment before paying
List every physical computer, each OS installation, each VM that will run GoodSync and any server-class machine. Compare that inventory with the five-device Personal allowance before checkout.
Windows File History, Syncthing and FreeFileSync provide alternative personal backup/sync models with different licensing assumptions.
Buying rule
Choose GoodSync Personal when your eligible nonbusiness installations truly fit inside five licensed devices. Count VMs and separate OS instances before buying, and use a different GoodSync license if the workflow includes a Server computer or business deployment.
