GoodSync Free vs Personal: When Do 3 Jobs & 100 Files Become Too Small?
The short answer
GoodSync Free is useful for proving that the workflow fits, but its limits are small by design. The current comparison page caps Free at three jobs and 100 files per job on one installation. GoodSync Personal removes those numerical limits and currently costs $29.95/year for the initial five-device personal license.
At a glance
- Best for
- A nonbusiness user who needs more than three jobs, more than 100 files in a job, unattended scheduling, or several licensed personal devices.
- Price model
- Personal $29.95/year for initial five-device personal license; storage separate
- Check first
- Storage is separate; sync direction and licensing rules require careful setup.
The first upgrade trigger is not “features” — it is a hard limit
If you have one or two tiny jobs with fewer than 100 files, Free can be enough. Once a real folder contains hundreds or thousands of files, or you need a fourth recurring job, the Free ceiling becomes operational rather than theoretical.
That is a cleaner purchase test than asking whether paid GoodSync has “more features.”
Personal also changes the device picture
The Personal license starts with five personal devices. That can fit a household with several computers or eligible NAS devices, but operating-system instances and virtual machines can count separately, and server/business use follows different licensing rules.
Count the exact devices before buying rather than assuming “five devices” means every machine or VM is covered.
Paid GoodSync can automate validated jobs
GoodSync distinguishes one-way Backup from two-way Synchronize and lets you Analyze actions before running them. It also supports scheduled, timer and file-change automation. That is useful only after you have verified the direction, deletions and endpoints.
History and recycled-file modes add recovery options, but they behave differently and need deliberate retention settings.
Storage is still separate
GoodSync Personal can use local, NAS and cloud endpoints; it does not force you to buy GoodSync Storage. The optional 100GB storage product is priced separately. If you already have a NAS or cloud account, the $29.95 software license and your storage bill remain separate decisions.
Compare no-extra-license alternatives
Windows File History can cover some Windows personal-file backup needs. Syncthing offers continuous device-to-device sync, while FreeFileSync provides folder comparison and synchronization workflows. These are not identical to GoodSync, but they are important baselines before paying for convenience and cross-endpoint automation.
Buying rule
Stay on Free when three jobs and 100 files per job genuinely cover the workflow. Buy Personal when those hard limits are repeatedly exceeded, unattended automation matters, or several personal devices need the same licensed workflow. Verify the device count, renewal price and storage costs separately before checkout.
