GetResponse Duplicate Contacts: Can One Subscriber Cost You Twice?
The short answer
GetResponse can charge more because of how your contacts are organized, not because you sent more email. Paid plans include unlimited monthly sends, but pricing is tied to list size.
At a glance
- Best for
- A team with overlapping lists, aggressive list segmentation, or rapid list growth that needs predictable GetResponse billing.
- Price model
- List-size pricing; duplicate contacts can count multiple times; extension fees may apply
- Check first
- Annual plans can still incur monthly extension fees; paid periods are nonrefundable.
One subscriber can count more than once
GetResponse says the same subscriber appearing on separate lists can be counted multiple times toward list size. A database of 8,000 unique people can therefore become a larger billable list if many of those people are duplicated across campaign lists.
Segments are usually cleaner than copied lists
Marketer includes advanced segmentation and automation. When targeting logic can be handled with segments, tags and automation, copying the same contacts into separate lists may be unnecessary.
This is both a data-hygiene issue and a billing issue.
List Extension Fees can appear before a formal upgrade
When the account exceeds its purchased list-size tier, GetResponse can apply a List Extension Fee. That lets service continue, but it turns contact growth into an extra recurring charge.
Annual billing does not prevent monthly overage charges
GetResponse specifically says list-extension charges can still be billed monthly even when the main plan is annual. That means “I prepaid for the year” does not freeze all contact-related costs.
Above 100,000 contacts, current documentation says each started additional 1,000 contacts can add $4. Smaller tiers can use different extension values, so the live account should control the exact number.
Audit duplicates before paying for a higher tier
Before upgrading because the account shows a larger list size, export or review contacts and identify duplicates across lists. The goal is not to delete valid subscribers; it is to stop paying twice for the same person when list architecture caused the duplication.
Nonrefundable paid periods raise the stakes
GetResponse says paid periods are nonrefundable. A list-cleanup review is therefore better before a higher annual commitment than after the charge.
Mailchimp, Brevo and Kit all price contacts/subscribers differently. Their counting rules should not be copied onto GetResponse.
Buying rule
Use one clean master-list structure where practical and segment contacts instead of duplicating them across many lists. Audit list duplication before upgrading tiers, and model monthly List Extension Fees even when the core GetResponse plan is annual.
