Verdict

Gemini 2 is easiest to justify when duplicate-file cleanup is a recurring Mac task, but the buying choice is not just “subscription or lifetime.” The current MacPaw Store lists the 1-Mac annual plan at $23.40/year, the monthly plan at $4.95/month, and a one-time purchase at $44.95. The annual page also says subscription discounts apply only to the first year, so do not assume $23.40 is a permanent renewal price.

Start with the trial and review before deleting

Gemini 2's trial can scan any amount of data and can be run repeatedly, but it removes only up to 500 MB. That is enough to check whether the app finds useful duplicates in the folders, Photos library, or drives you actually care about before paying.

By default, Smart Selection automatically selects only 100% identical duplicates and keeps at least one copy. “Similar” files are different: Gemini groups them for review and does not select them automatically by default. For photos and documents where two versions may look nearly identical but have different value, use Review Results instead of treating similarity as proof that one copy is disposable.

Annual, monthly, or one-time?

The current 1-Mac annual plan is $1.95/month equivalent, billed $23.40 for the year. Twelve months of the current $4.95 monthly plan would total $59.40 if the price stayed unchanged, so monthly mainly buys flexibility rather than the lowest one-year cost. The one-time purchase is $44.95.

Two current annual charges would total $46.80, which is $1.85 more than today's one-time price. That is only static arithmetic, not a guaranteed break-even: MacPaw says subscription discounts apply only to the first year, while this research did not verify a Gemini-specific promise about what future major-version upgrades a one-time license includes. Compare the live renewal and one-time terms when you buy.

If you already subscribe to Setapp, do not buy Gemini 2 again without checking your catalog. MacPaw's current installation guide says Gemini 2 is already included for Setapp users, while Setapp membership currently starts at $14.99/month for one Mac and includes hundreds of apps.

What “1 Mac” means

A regular Gemini 2 license activates one Mac at a time. It is not permanently tied to the first machine: MacPaw lets you deactivate or reset the license and activate it on a replacement Mac. If you need Gemini active on two or five Macs at once, MacPaw sells separate multi-Mac plans.

This makes the 1-Mac plan suitable for one active Mac even if you replace hardware later. It does not make one license a simultaneous multi-Mac license.

Deletion safety matters more than scan speed

Gemini moves selected duplicates to the Trash by default, which normally gives you a recovery path. But removal settings can be changed to permanent deletion. External or network volumes may not have a Trash folder, in which case removed files can be unrecoverable.

For an important library, scan a disposable folder first, review the selected duplicates, and leave similar-file selection manual until you trust the workflow. Confirm the removal destination before cleaning an external drive. These are proposed acceptance checks, not Toolnavia test results.

Refund, cancellation, and alternatives

MacPaw's current refund policy gives monthly subscriptions a 14-day initial-purchase window and annual or other purchases a 30-day initial-purchase window. Automatic subscription renewals are not covered by the same refund policy. MacPaw also says subscriptions can be canceled during the paid period and remain usable until that period ends.

For price context, Cisdem Duplicate Finder currently lists $19.99/year or $39.99 one-time for one Mac. Nektony's Duplicate File Finder is currently $14.95/year in its store, with its product overview also showing $7.99/month and $34.99 one-time. These are pricing and workflow references, not claims that one scanner finds duplicates more accurately.

Next step

Use the Gemini 2 trial on a representative folder, manually inspect similar files, and confirm that default Trash recovery works on the storage you intend to clean. Choose annual if you expect at least a year of recurring use and the live renewal is acceptable; choose one-time if its current terms fit your longer-term needs; choose monthly for a short cleanup project.
