Verdict
CleanMyMac's current MacPaw Store pricing makes the annual subscription look almost mathematically identical to a three-year one-time comparison: $39.95 per year versus $119.95 one-time for one Mac. But that shortcut is misleading. MacPaw says the current annual discount applies only to the first year, while the one-time purchase covers the current major version without future major upgrades included. The real decision is upgrade entitlement and renewal uncertainty, not simple division.
What the annual subscription buys
The current one-Mac annual plan is shown at $3.33/month equivalent, billed $39.95 for the year. A subscription includes updates to the current major version and upgrades to future major CleanMyMac versions while the subscription remains active.
CleanMyMac's current product pages include cleanup and storage tools, application uninstall/update workflows, maintenance functions, and Cloud Cleanup for supported services such as iCloud Drive, Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox. These are documented capabilities, not Toolnavia measurements of how much storage or performance a particular Mac will gain.
The direct MacPaw Store also offers one-, two-, and five-Mac plans. This article registers only the one-Mac annual subscription so the comparison stays clean.
What the $119.95 one-time purchase changes
The current one-Mac one-time price is $119.95. A one-time license does not expire, and MacPaw says you can keep using it as long as the software remains compatible with your Mac and macOS version.
The important limitation is major-version upgrades. One-time buyers receive updates and fixes for the current major version, but a future major CleanMyMac version can require a paid upgrade or new license. Subscribers receive future major upgrades during the subscription term.
That makes the one-time plan attractive for buyers who prefer no automatic renewal and are comfortable staying on the purchased major version. It is less attractive if you expect to follow every future major release without extra upgrade costs.
Why the tempting three-year break-even is unsafe
Three current annual payments at $39.95 would equal $119.85, only ten cents below today's $119.95 one-time price. That looks like a three-year break-even—but the current store explicitly says subscription discounts apply to the first year only. It does not publish a fixed future renewal for this exact one-Mac annual offer.
So the correct comparison is not “annual wins under three years, one-time wins after three years.” Instead:
- Choose annual if future major upgrades matter and you prefer a lower upfront payment. - Choose one-time if avoiding recurring billing matters more and you accept current-major-only upgrade rights. - Recheck the live annual renewal before using any multi-year cost calculation.
The monthly plan is currently $9.95, but it is mainly a flexibility option rather than the article's formal offer.
Trial, cancellation, refund, and marketplace boundaries
MacPaw currently offers a seven-day full-feature trial across the MacPaw Store, App Store, and Setapp editions. Use it to test the actual cleanup, uninstall, update, and maintenance workflow on a noncritical Mac before purchasing.
MacPaw Store subscriptions renew automatically. You can cancel at any time, and CleanMyMac remains fully functional until the end of the paid billing period; cancellation stops the next renewal rather than ending access immediately.
For direct MacPaw Store purchases, current support says eligible CleanMyMac purchases can be refunded within 30 days. App Store and Setapp purchases use their own refund processes.
The marketplaces are not identical. MacPaw says Apple sandbox and review rules restrict some system-level functions in the App Store edition. Setapp is a separate subscription that includes CleanMyMac plus more than 260 other apps and major upgrades. This article therefore uses the direct MacPaw Store as its formal reference.
How alternatives frame the price
MacCleaner Pro currently costs $39.95/year or $85.95 one-time for one Mac, with a two-day trial. Avast Cleanup Premium currently shows $29.99 first year for one Mac and a $65.99/year renewal, with a 30-day trial.
DaisyDisk is much narrower: $9.99 one-time for a lifetime license on up to five personal Macs, focused on finding and deleting disk-space usage rather than an all-in-one maintenance suite. BuhoCleaner currently advertises a seasonal one-Mac annual plan at $17.99 and a $25.99 lifetime license; seasonal pricing can change. These are scope-and-price comparisons, not cleanup-performance rankings.
Next step
Start with the seven-day trial. If you want future major CleanMyMac upgrades and a lower first payment, the current $39.95 annual plan is the clearer fit. If you want to avoid recurring billing and are comfortable buying major upgrades separately when needed, the $119.95 one-time plan is more coherent.
