Verdict
FreshBooks Lite has one of the clearest first-year offers in small-business accounting right now: eligible new customers can pay $1/month for 12 months, or $12 across the promotional first year. The current standard monthly Lite price is $23, but after the 12-month offer FreshBooks says billing moves to the then-current standard monthly price, not a guaranteed $23 forever. The practical purchase gate is the Lite plan's five-client limit.
The $1 offer is a buy-now path, not the free trial
FreshBooks' current Buy Now & Save terms give eligible first-time customers Lite for $1/month for 12 months. The offer began September 15, 2026, can be changed or ended for future buyers, and cannot be combined with another offer.
This purchase path does not include the separate free trial. FreshBooks also offers a 30-day no-card trial, but you choose either the trial route or the Buy Now promotion rather than stacking both. The Buy Now promotion itself includes a 30-day money-back guarantee for the subscription fee.
At $1/month, the promotional first year totals $12. Twelve months at the current $23 standard monthly price would total $276, but that is only a current-price comparison. Month 13 is billed at whatever the then-current standard Lite price is.
Five clients is the real Lite limit
Lite currently allows invoices to five clients. FreshBooks counts both active and archived clients toward that limit. Archiving an old client therefore does not free a slot.
Deleting a client does free the slot. FreshBooks says deleted clients do not count toward plan limits, while their past invoices and payments remain accessible and the client can later be undeleted. That makes client cleanup possible without erasing historical billing records.
If five billable clients are not enough, Plus is the next common step and currently supports 50 clients. The current standard monthly Plus price is $43, although temporary Plus promotions can differ. Do not upgrade simply because a sixth name exists in the address book—upgrade when the client truly needs to remain billable.
Add-ons can cost more than the base plan
Lite includes invoicing, expense tracking, estimates, online payment acceptance, tax-time reports, and mobile access. FreshBooks also lists Team Members at $11/month per user, Advanced Payments at $20/month, and Payroll at $40/month plus $6/month per payroll user on the current US pricing page. Payment-processing fees are separate from the subscription price.
That means a $1 promotional base subscription can still produce a much larger monthly business-software bill if payroll, additional team members, or payment add-ons are needed. Price the complete workflow, not just Lite.
Cancellation, downgrade, and refunds are separate rules
FreshBooks subscriptions recur automatically. Downgrading may require reducing active and archived clients, team members, accountants, retainers, or other plan-specific usage before the lower plan can apply. Canceling leaves access available through the end of the paid billing period.
Refund language depends on the situation. The specific $1 Buy Now offer provides a 30-day money-back guarantee on the initial promotional subscription purchase. FreshBooks' general Terms otherwise say subscription fees are generally non-refundable, while cancellation support describes short grace/dispute routes for recent charges. This guide treats the offer-specific 30-day guarantee as the rule for an eligible initial $1 purchase and does not assume later renewals are automatically refundable.
Market context
QuickBooks Online Simple Start currently has a $38/month standard US price, with new-customer storefront promotions that can temporarily reduce it. Wave Starter is $0, while Wave Pro is $19/month or $190/year. Xero Early's US standard price became $27/month on October 1, 2026, with a current first-three-month discount. Zoho Books Standard is $20/month or $15/month billed annually. These are price-and-scope references, not accounting-accuracy or tax-advice rankings.
Next step
Choose the $1 Lite offer if five billable clients, the core invoicing/accounting workflow, and the add-on costs fit your business. If you are unsure about workflow fit, use the separate 30-day trial instead of assuming it stacks with the promotion. Before month 13, review the then-current standard price and cancel or change plans if the renewal no longer makes sense.
