Duplicator Plus vs Basic: Are Hourly Backups & 5 Sites Worth $120/Year?
The short answer
Duplicator Basic is normally $79 per year and Plus is normally $199, so the regular annual gap is $120. Duplicator currently runs introductory promotions, but its pricing page says renewals are at full price, so the regular figures are the safer long-term comparison. Plus expands the license from two sites to five, adds hourly backups and advanced migration controls, and changes cloud storage from one selected destination on Basic to unlimited destinations. If you manage several WordPress sites or need hourly recovery points, Plus has a concrete reason to exist. A one- or two-site owner with daily/weekly backup needs may not need it.

Use the regular renewal price for the durable comparison
The live pricing page shows Basic “Normally $79” and Plus “Normally $199,” alongside a temporary promotional banner. Duplicator explicitly states that special introductory pricing renews at full price. Its upgrade documentation also says plan upgrades are prorated and future renewal uses the standard renewal rate for the upgraded license. That means the $120 regular annual gap is more useful than reverse-engineering a temporary discount that may disappear before your next billing cycle.
Five sites can make the license math more attractive
Basic covers up to two sites; Plus covers up to five. At regular pricing, Basic averages $39.50 per licensed site if both activations are used, while Plus averages $39.80 if all five are used. Those are internal allocation ratios, not Duplicator's per-site prices. The important point is that Plus nearly preserves the same full-utilization per-site cost while more than doubling site capacity. If you only have one site, however, unused activations provide no value.
Hourly backups are the clearest operational upgrade
Basic already includes scheduled backups, one-click restore points, encryption, server-to-server import, drag-and-drop migration and unlimited backups/migrations. Plus adds hourly backups, installer branding, migration of Duplicator settings, SALT regeneration and table-prefix migration controls. Hourly backup frequency matters most for sites that change frequently—stores, membership sites or active publishing operations—where a daily backup can leave a larger recovery gap. It does not guarantee zero data loss; actual recovery still depends on successful backup creation and storage.
Cloud destinations change from one choice to unlimited
Basic includes cloud storage integrations but asks the buyer to select one destination. Plus lists unlimited destinations across supported services such as Google Drive, Amazon S3, Dropbox, OneDrive, FTP/SFTP and S3-compatible storage. A site owner who only needs one off-site destination may be perfectly served by Basic. Plus becomes more useful when the backup policy intentionally uses multiple storage targets or different destinations across several sites.
The affiliate program is open and pays 20%
Duplicator's official affiliate page has a live signup path, manually reviews applications and advertises 20% commission on qualifying referred sales. Its current affiliate terms say applications can be approved or rejected and commissions are paid monthly after the referred account remains active for the required period. The affiliate page still shows examples based on older promotional license prices, so this article does not reuse those examples for current buyer pricing. Toolnavia has not applied or been approved, so affiliate tracking remains disabled.
The buying rule is straightforward: choose Basic when up to two sites, one cloud destination and standard scheduled backups cover the real workload. Choose Plus when three to five sites, hourly backups or multiple cloud destinations are already operational requirements. Evaluate that decision against the $199 regular annual renewal—not only today's temporary introductory discount.
