Brevo Standard vs Starter: Is Automation Worth $9/Month More?

The short answer

Brevo Starter starts at $9 per month and Standard at $18, so the entry price gap is $9 per month before any yearly-billing discount. Both entry tiers currently include 5,000 emails per month and up to 500 stored contacts, but the purpose of the two plans is different. Starter removes the Free plan's daily sending limit and adds basic paid marketing capacity. Standard adds marketing automation for unlimited contacts, A/B testing, AI send-time optimization, one landing page, advanced reports and analytics, and priority email support. If your main need is simply sending newsletters without a daily cap, Starter can be enough. If automated journeys and testing are part of the actual marketing workflow, Standard has a clearer reason to exist.

The $9 gap is about workflow, not email volume at the entry tier

At the lowest paid level, Starter and Standard both begin with 5,000 monthly email sends and 500 stored contacts. That means moving to Standard does not buy a larger entry send allowance. Instead, it buys a more sophisticated way to use the same audience: automation, experimentation, optimization and deeper reporting. Brevo currently gives a 10% discount when paid yearly, with the annual amount paid upfront, so the relative gap narrows slightly on yearly billing while the feature decision remains the same.

Standard changes automation from limited to a real operating layer

Brevo's current pricing documentation lists marketing automation for unlimited contacts on Standard, whereas Starter is the simpler email-marketing tier. This matters for onboarding sequences, lead nurturing, abandoned workflows, behavioral follow-ups and other journeys that need to keep running as the contact database grows. Automation does not guarantee more revenue or better engagement; it gives the marketer a rules-based workflow that can execute without manually sending every step.

A/B testing and AI send-time optimization are Standard features

Standard adds A/B testing and AI send-time optimization, letting a marketer test campaign variants and schedule around Brevo's optimization logic rather than using one fixed version and one manually chosen send time. It also adds advanced reporting and analytics. These tools are most valuable when the team will actually use test results to change future campaigns. A small newsletter that rarely tests subject lines, content or timing may not gain enough value from them to justify doubling the entry monthly price.

Team access is another boundary buyers often miss

Brevo's current user-permissions documentation says an account has its owner, while Standard can support up to three marketing user seats through the current add-on structure; additional marketing seats are currently $12 per month each. Starter remains much more owner-centric. That makes Standard more appropriate for a small marketing team that needs separate access and permissions, but the extra seats are not automatically free just because the plan is Standard. Buyers should price team add-ons separately from the $18 plan headline.

The affiliate program is open, but its paid CPA is not publicly fixed

Brevo's current affiliate program is designed for bloggers, publishers and content creators and is run through PartnerStack. Brevo says approved affiliates receive a fixed CPA for referred paid accounts; the public help article does not publish that CPA amount. After an affiliate has referred at least one paying account, a CPL component becomes available and pays $5 for referred free accounts under the current rules. Brevo says applications are reviewed and payouts are handled monthly through PartnerStack. Toolnavia has not applied or been approved, so affiliate tracking remains disabled and this article does not invent a paid-account commission amount.

The buying rule is simple: choose Starter when the job is mainly regular email sends without a daily cap. Choose Standard when unlimited-contact automation, A/B testing, send-time optimization, advanced reporting, a landing page or multi-user marketing access is already part of the workflow. If those features are still hypothetical, the $9 monthly upgrade buys complexity before the business needs it.
