1Password Individual vs Families: Is Families Already Cheaper for 2 People?

The short answer

For two people, 1Password Families is not just a five-user plan you may grow into. Current US annual-equivalent pricing makes two Individual plans more expensive than one Families subscription in both the first-year and regular-rate examples. Individual is $2.99/month billed annually first year with a regular displayed $3.99/month rate; Families is $4.49/month first year and shows $5.99/month regular.

Two Individual first-year plans total $71.76 versus $53.88 for Families, a $17.88 difference. At current regular displayed rates, two Individuals total $95.76 versus $71.88 for Families, a $23.88 difference before tax.

One person should still buy Individual

If only one person needs a full account, Individual remains the direct fit. Families becomes relevant when a second person needs an independent private account rather than occasional item sharing.

Two full private accounts change the decision

Families gives each member a Private vault while allowing selected household credentials to live in shared vaults. Organizers cannot browse another member's Private vault.

Recovery adds household value

Families includes organizer-assisted recovery. That can help when one person loses access without turning normal family administration into routine visibility of private items.

Billing details still matter

Membership billing can prorate account changes, so live account billing controls exact charges if household membership changes. 1Password terms also allow fees to change with notice. The arithmetic here is a current snapshot, not a permanent savings guarantee.

Refund flexibility is limited: paid charges and unused time are generally not refunded. Cancellation and frozen-account behavior are managed separately.

Five seats do not mean you should invent users

Families includes five users and five guests. The value for two people comes from two real private accounts plus shared household administration, not from filling all seats. Independent family-password-manager comparisons also treat household administration as a distinct buying problem.

Buying rule

Choose Individual when only one person needs a full vault. When two people both need independent private vaults, compare Families first: at current displayed annual-equivalent pricing it is already cheaper than two Individuals and adds shared vaults plus recovery.
