Hostwinds Managed Linux VPS 4GB: $25.99, $20 cPanel and 72-Hour Refunds

The short answer

Hostwinds Managed Linux VPS 4GB is a 2-vCPU, 4GB RAM server whose live page currently shows $25.99 per month against a $39.99 reference price. Full server management and root access are included, but cPanel and cloud backups are separate paid choices, and the refund request window is only 72 hours after payment.

Treat $25.99 as the current display, not a guaranteed renewal rate

The 4GB tier lists 2 CPU cores, 4GB RAM, 75GB SSD storage and 2TB monthly bandwidth. The live page displays $39.99 and $25.99 side by side, but it does not expose a captured customer renewal invoice in the readable text. Use $25.99 as the current public purchase display and verify the actual billing cycle and future renewal in checkout.

Hostwinds' current refund documentation is much more explicit than its pricing page: eligible services must be cancelled first, then the refund request must be made within 72 hours of the payment transaction. That same rule applies around renewals, so this is a short acceptance window rather than a conventional 30-day hosting trial.

Four benefits matter when you actually need managed infrastructure

First, 2 vCPU and 4GB RAM provide a concrete capacity envelope rather than an unlimited-resource promise. Second, Hostwinds' managed-service scope includes operating-system updates, virus scans, boot failures, package installation, DNS and firewall work, while custom application code remains outside the support boundary.

Third, managed Linux still gives full root access, so management does not mean a locked-down server. Fourth, complimentary migration is available for managed services during the first 60 days and can cover cPanel, Plesk or control-panel-free environments when valid source credentials are available. Those are useful operational advantages, but they do not replace application monitoring or change control.

cPanel is not included in the $25.99 server price

The Linux VPS page says cPanel/WHM is available as a preconfigured template, but buyers must purchase a cPanel license separately. Hostwinds' current license store lists a cPanel Cloud License starting at $20 per month.

That makes a simple current server-plus-cPanel reference $45.99 per month before backup storage, tax and other add-ons. It is arithmetic, not a captured invoice. The 4GB tier meets Hostwinds' stated cPanel minimum guidance of at least 1 CPU core, 2GB RAM and 50GB disk, but workload headroom still depends on what you run.

“Nightly Backups” only applies after the backup service is purchased

The product page promotes automated nightly backups. The more specific backup documentation clarifies the commercial boundary: for VPS hosting, the backup service costs $1 per month plus $0.03 per GB stored in Hostwinds object storage. Backups run nightly by default and use a 60-day default retention period once that backup service is active.

This resolves the sales-page shorthand. Nightly is the default schedule for a purchased backup service; it is not evidence that unlimited backup storage is included in the base VPS price. Retention and changing data can increase stored gigabytes, so budget from actual object-storage usage rather than only the server's 75GB disk size.

Cancellation can leave backup storage billing behind

Hostwinds' cancellation documentation adds an unusual exit detail: object storage, snapshots and related storage are billed separately, and cancelling the VPS does not automatically remove them. If you no longer want them, delete the stored backups separately or hourly storage charges can continue.

Before cancelling, export anything needed for recovery, confirm the migration destination, remove storage only after the new copy is verified, then save the cancellation and refund confirmations. Do not treat VPS cancellation itself as proof that all associated storage charges stopped.

Use the 72-hour window for a focused acceptance test

A low-risk sequence is to keep the old host active, migrate one representative workload, verify root and support access, confirm the exact cPanel and backup add-ons, and perform one disposable restore from the purchased backup service. Hostwinds says managed migrations are complimentary during the first 60 days, but the refund window is far shorter, so the financial acceptance test needs to happen first.

Choose the 4GB Managed Linux VPS when 2 vCPU/4GB fits, root plus managed support is valuable, and you are comfortable budgeting cPanel and backup separately. Skip it when you expect cPanel and nightly backup storage inside the $25.99 base display, or when a 72-hour refund decision is too short for your migration process.
