TOOLNAVIA / BUYING GUIDE

Bluehost Starter Total Cost: Hosting, Domain & Email After Year One

The short answer

Bluehost Starter gets attention at $3.99 a month, but that number is useful only after you translate it into the bill you actually commit to. On Bluehost's current US pricing page, Starter is $3.99/month equivalent on a 36-month first term, so the simple hosting arithmetic is $143.64 before tax and optional add-ons. The current 36-month renewal is $9.99/month, or $359.64 for another 36 months.

Start with the 36-month hosting bill

Starter currently supports up to 10 websites, 10GB NVMe storage and an "ideal for" planning figure around 40K visits per month. It also includes free SSL, CDN, a first-year domain, a migration tool and weekly backups.

The important phrase is "36-month term." The $3.99 headline is a monthly equivalent, not a month-to-month commitment. The first-term hosting math is $3.99 × 36 = $143.64.

That long first term makes sense when a buyer already expects to keep a small site online for several years and Starter's 10GB / ~40K planning range leaves comfortable headroom. If you are not sure, use the early refund window to validate migration, SSL, backups, support workflow and real resource needs while the exit path is still clearer.

Put renewal into the budget before checkout

At the current posted 36-month renewal rate, Starter is $9.99/month, so another 36 months would be $359.64. The difference versus the first-term hosting arithmetic is $216 over three years.

That increase does not automatically make Starter poor value. It changes who should buy it. Starter is easiest to justify when the introductory savings matter, the site's requirements remain modest, and you are willing to reassess the market before renewal.

Bluehost explicitly says renewal prices can change. When renewal approaches, use the account Renewal Center as the final current source rather than assuming today's renewal stays fixed.

The free domain is a first-year benefit

Starter currently includes a domain for the first year. That lowers launch-year cost, but the domain is not permanently free.

Bluehost's current domain pricing lists .com renewal at $23.99 per year, and the dedicated .com page shows the same current renewal figure. If that posted price stayed unchanged, keeping one .com through years two and three of the initial 36-month hosting term would add $47.98.

That is a budgeting illustration, not a promise about future domain pricing. Domain privacy is also listed separately, currently at $15 for supported domains. Choose it because you need it, not because every checkout box looks mandatory.

Professional Email is optional, not part of the $3.99 math

Bluehost's hosting pricing labels Pro Email as a free trial. The current Professional Email page lists the entry mailbox at $1.67/month on a 12-month term and a renewal equivalent of $2.50/month.

If you already use Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or another email provider, you may not need Bluehost Professional Email. If you want the same provider to handle mailboxes, add email as its own recurring budget instead of silently treating a trial as permanent inclusion.

The best Bluehost checkout is not the one with the most boxes checked. It is the smallest configuration that solves your actual hosting, domain and email needs.

A realistic Starter budget

For a small WordPress site that fits Starter's published limits, I would separate the decision into four buckets:

- Hosting first term: $143.64 simple arithmetic at today's 36-month introductory equivalent. - Hosting renewal: $359.64 for a later 36-month term at today's posted renewal rate. - Domain after year one: currently $23.99/year for .com if you keep it at Bluehost. - Email: optional; current Professional Email pricing is separate from hosting after the trial.

Taxes, future changes and optional products can alter the final bill. The goal is not to predict every future dollar. The goal is to make sure $3.99 is not the only number you see.

Who should buy Starter now?

Starter makes the most sense when you are launching a first or small WordPress site, 10GB and the published traffic planning range leave room, chat support is enough, and a 36-month first term does not create cash-flow pressure.

Compare a higher Bluehost tier if you already know you need more sites/storage, phone support or the additional security/privacy bundle available higher in the lineup.

Before paying, check the live cart, remove extras you do not need, save the renewal month in your calendar and verify the current refund terms. If the live numbers still fit your budget, Starter is a simple way to buy the core hosting stack without pretending the introductory rate lasts forever.
