Four reasons Starter can fit a VPN-first household
Use one subscription on unlimited devices
Surfshark says every plan supports unlimited simultaneous VPN connections. That is useful for a household with many phones, laptops, tablets and streaming devices because you do not need to ration a fixed connection count. The boundary is that unlimited connections do not make every device equally compatible with every feature or platform.
Keep a separate online identity for less-trusted sign-ups
Starter includes Alternative ID, which can generate alternative personal details and an email address for registrations where you do not want to expose your normal inbox. It can reduce spam exposure without buying One. It is an identity-separation tool, not a guarantee that a service will accept the generated details or that your real identity can never be inferred.
Use Dynamic MultiHop when one VPN hop is not the goal
Starter includes Dynamic MultiHop, which routes traffic through two VPN servers and lets you choose entry and exit locations. That can be useful for a specific privacy workflow. The extra hop can increase latency, so it is not automatically better for ordinary browsing or streaming.

Starter includes Bypasser split tunneling plus CleanWeb ad, tracker and cookie-pop-up blocking. Bypasser can leave selected apps or sites outside the VPN when a service needs the normal connection. CleanWeb can reduce unwanted page elements, but neither feature should be treated as a replacement for a full endpoint-security suite.
What you pay now—and why the renewal is not a fixed public number
The current general US pricing page lists Starter at $67.23 upfront for the first 27 months, including three extra months. The $2.49 figure is a monthly equivalent, not a monthly installment. Surfshark’s current plan guide lists the 12-month Starter rate at $3.39 per month ($40.68 total) and month-to-month at $16.45.
After the long-term term, Surfshark says the subscription renews annually at the standard non-introductory full price. It emails most long-term customers 30 days before renewal, keeps the renewal currency tied to the first payment, recalculates tax at renewal and explicitly reserves the right to A/B test displayed renewal prices.
The same official renewal page currently does not expose one stable numeric USD Starter renewal in its public static content. This guide therefore does not use the $79/year figure reported by third parties as an official current price. If knowing the exact future renewal amount before purchase is a hard requirement, do not rely on auto-renewal: turn it off and re-shop before the term ends.
Starter vs One: the first-term difference is small, but the bundle is different
Surfshark One is currently $75.33 for the first 27 months, only $8.10 more than Starter’s $67.23. The plan guide lists One at $3.59/month on the 12-month term versus Starter at $3.39, and $18.95 month-to-month versus $16.45.
The detailed plan guide and support plan table say Starter includes the VPN and Alternative ID, while One adds Antivirus, Alert and Antiscam. The main pricing page’s flattened feature text can visually look broader, so this guide uses the plan-specific guide/support table for entitlement. Choose Starter if you already have security tools you trust; choose One only if those extras would replace something you otherwise need.
Trial, refund and cancellation: two official pages disagree about the 7-day trial
Surfshark’s current Help Center says new users can get a 7-day website trial on eligible 12- or 24-month plans using supported payment methods, with up to three devices during the trial. Its current plans blog still says the 7-day trial is through Google Play or the Apple App Store and tells website buyers to use the 30-day money-back guarantee instead. Because those official instructions conflict, check the checkout flow you actually see rather than assuming a universal trial route.
The 30-day money-back guarantee is clearer: Surfshark says it applies to the first eligible purchase, while renewed subscriptions are not covered by that guarantee. Turning off auto-renewal stops future payments but leaves access active until the paid period ends; cancellation by itself is not a refund.
What to do next
Choose Starter when unlimited-device VPN access, Alternative ID, MultiHop and routing controls cover the job. Choose One when its Antivirus, Alert and Antiscam replace tools you would otherwise pay for—the current first-term difference is only $8.10. If you need a fixed renewal price disclosed before purchase, or a permanent free VPN, compare another provider instead of assuming Surfshark’s introductory rate continues.
