ExpressVPN Basic VPN: $83.72 First Term vs $99.95 Renewal

The short answer

ExpressVPN Basic fits buyers who mainly want the VPN itself, Lite Protection and up to 10 simultaneous device connections. The current US offer is $83.72 upfront for the first 28 months, then lists a $99.95 annual renewal. Budget around that renewal, not the promotional $2.99 monthly equivalent.

Four reasons Basic can be enough

Ten simultaneous device connections

Current plan-specific pricing and subscription pages assign Basic up to 10 simultaneous connections. That can cover a normal mix of phones, laptops, tablets and streaming devices. ExpressVPN's generic Features page says "up to 14" across the product family, but current tier documents reserve higher caps for Advanced and Pro, so this guide uses 10 for Basic.

Lite Protection without the larger bundle

Basic includes Lite Protection for ads, malicious sites and adult sites. It adds practical web filtering without paying for Advanced solely to get a larger privacy bundle. Tracker blocking belongs to Advanced Protection, so Basic should not be described as receiving the full higher-tier protection set.

Core VPN platform features remain included

The current plan matrix includes Lightway, post-quantum protection, multiplatform apps, a built-in speed test and server locations in 113 countries across the plans. Those capabilities mean the upgrade decision can focus on bundle extras rather than assuming Basic lacks the main VPN platform. These are vendor-documented features, not Toolnavia speed or streaming tests.

A small private-email relay allowance

Basic includes ExpressMailGuard with 10 MB per month of private relay traffic and 10 shared aliases. It can separate some sign-ups from a primary inbox. Advanced raises the allowance and adds more identity tools, so heavy relay use can justify moving up.

What the current offer really costs

The live US pricing page charges $83.72 upfront for 2 years plus 4 extra months. The $2.99 figure is a monthly equivalent, not a monthly installment. After month 28, Basic currently lists a $99.95 annual renewal, with sales tax where applicable.

ExpressVPN says supported payment methods auto-renew by default, and 2-year plans renew annually after the introductory term. Checkout shows the initial price, renewal price and billing frequency; promotional pricing applies only to the first term. Monthly and 12-month subscriptions also exist, but this article does not fill in figures that were not exposed in the long-term view used for this publication-day check.

When Advanced is worth the extra cost

Advanced currently costs $125.72 for the first 28 months, $42 more than Basic, and lists a $119.95 annual renewal, $20 more than Basic's current renewal. It raises the simultaneous-device cap to 12 and adds tracker blocking, larger ExpressMailGuard limits, ExpressKeys and other bundle features.

Pay the difference when those extras replace tools you otherwise need. Stay on Basic when 10 connections, Lite Protection and the smaller mail-relay allowance solve the job. A dedicated IP is an optional paid add-on for eligible direct-web Basic and Advanced subscriptions, not part of Basic's listed price.

Trial, refund and cancellation boundaries

The 30-day money-back guarantee is for eligible first-time direct purchasers; previous refund recipients can be ineligible, and app-store purchases follow the store's refund process. Renewed periods are not covered by the initial-purchase guarantee under current terms.

A separate 3-day mobile trial is available through supported iOS and Android app stores. It converts to a paid store subscription unless canceled, so it is not a permanent free Basic plan or the same thing as the direct-web 30-day guarantee.

For eligible website purchases, turn off automatic renewal in the account portal if you do not want the next charge. Store-billed subscriptions are managed in the relevant store; cancellation stops the next cycle while paid access continues through the current period.

What to do next

Choose Basic when 10 simultaneous connections, Lite Protection, the core VPN platform and the smaller ExpressMailGuard allowance cover your real use. Save the first-term total, displayed renewal, tax and renewal date, then check the service on the devices you actually use while the applicable refund window remains open.

Choose Advanced only when its extra two device slots, tracker blocking, larger mail-relay allowance or bundled tools replace something you genuinely need. If more than 10 direct connections or a permanent free VPN is a hard requirement, compare another provider.
