TOOLNAVIA / BUYING GUIDE

HostPapa vs Cloudways: $106 for 3 Years or $11/Month Cloud?

The short answer

HostPapa Essentials and Cloudways Flexible can both host a small WordPress site, but they sell different operating models. HostPapa is a prepaid shared-hosting bundle: $2.95/month equivalent for the first 36 months, then $8.99/month on the current three-year renewal. Cloudways Flexible is managed cloud hosting: its DigitalOcean page lists a 1GB/1-core/25GB starting server at $11/month, billed by usage instead of by a three-year hosting contract.

Fixed shared bundle or managed cloud server?

HostPapa Essentials gives one website, 25GB NVMe and a published shared-resource ceiling. HostPapa's technical chart places the account inside shared CPU, memory, entry-process, I/O and database limits. That is simple for a brochure site or modest WordPress install, but growth means staying inside a fixed shared envelope or moving to a larger plan.

Cloudways Flexible is a managed layer over cloud infrastructure. On the provider-specific DigitalOcean page, the starting server is 1GB RAM, 1 core, 25GB storage and 1TB transfer. Cloudways adds staging, caching, monitoring and scaling tools, while the buyer still chooses and pays for server size.

Three-year base cost: $106.20 versus about $396

HostPapa's first 36 months at $2.95/month total $106.20 before tax, domain renewals and optional services. A later three-year renewal at the current $8.99/month rate is $323.64.

Cloudways at $11/month for 36 full months is about $396 before backup storage, add-ons, overages and tax. The cash-flow model is different: HostPapa exchanges a long prepaid term for a low headline rate; Cloudways keeps the server usage-billed and lets you resize or delete resources.

Cloudways' general pricing hub currently presents the entry tiers differently from its provider-specific DigitalOcean page. This article therefore anchors the DO1GB/DO2GB figures on the provider-specific page and treats the live platform quote as final.

Stopping a site does not stop cost the same way

HostPapa is a prepaid term, so making a site idle does not create hourly savings inside a term you already purchased.

Cloudways warns that merely stopping DigitalOcean, Linode or Vultr infrastructure does not stop the infrastructure charge. To stop server billing you must delete the server, and paid add-ons must be deactivated separately. This matters for seasonal sites, short campaigns and staging servers.

Backup economics are very different

HostPapa's current renewal table lists Automated Website Backup Basic 1GB at $47.99/year after the included period.

Cloudways Flexible uses off-site backups and bills backup storage separately at $0.033/GB, rounded in $0.50 increments. Frequency and retention can be changed, so the final bill depends on data churn and retention.

For frequently changing stores or membership sites, compare restore workflow and recovery points rather than only the base hosting line.

Scaling control

HostPapa publishes a shared-resource envelope. That is helpful because you can reject Essentials before buying if CPU, RAM, I/O or database limits are obviously too small.

Cloudways starts from a chosen cloud server and lets the owner resize as workload grows. Staging and caching are part of the more operationally active workflow. Developers, agencies and growing WooCommerce sites can value that control; a simple one-site brochure may not.

Which should you choose?

Choose HostPapa Essentials when one modest site clearly fits the shared limits, cPanel familiarity matters, and minimizing the first three years of base hosting cost is the priority.

Choose Cloudways Flexible when managed cloud infrastructure, staging/caching, server resizing and usage-based billing justify a higher base bill and more active cost management.

Neither price proves performance. If traffic, commerce or uptime requirements are business-critical, validate the live workload before treating either entry plan as sufficient.
