HostPapa Essentials Free Domain: What Year 2 Really Costs
The short answer
HostPapa Essentials includes a **free domain registration or transfer for the first year**, but that does not make the domain permanently free. The hosting plan currently starts at $2.95/month on the three-year discounted term, while the domain becomes a separate annual renewal cost after year one.
That distinction matters because a hosting buyer can save on the first year and still face a different second-year domain bill, separate privacy fees, transfer timing rules, and a non-refundable domain charge if the hosting account is cancelled early.
At a glance
- Best for
- Buyers who value a first-year domain benefit and will budget registrar costs separately.
- Price model
- Essentials currently $2.95/mo on the 3-year intro term; domain renewal varies by TLD.
- Check first
- The free-domain benefit lasts one year, privacy is separate, and transfer eligibility varies by domain status/TLD.
The free domain is a one-year benefit
HostPapa's current Web Hosting page says Essentials includes one free domain registration or transfer for the first year on eligible terms. The detailed free-domain policy says the hosting plan must meet the required billing term and the chosen extension must qualify.
This is one eligible domain event—either a new registration or a transfer—and only the first registration year is covered.
Year two becomes a registrar bill
After the first year, HostPapa says the domain renews at the then-current annual rate. The current renewal table lists .com at $23.99/year and .net at $22.99/year before applicable taxes or fees.
Registrar economics are not universal: Cloudflare, for example, uses a different model that bundles WHOIS redaction and markets at-cost registration/renewal pricing. That comparison is not a reason to leave HostPapa; it simply shows why the hosting promo and the registrar cost should be evaluated separately.
Domain Privacy is not included
HostPapa's free-domain policy explicitly excludes Domain Privacy. Its privacy guide describes Domain Privacy as a separate add-on that hides eligible registrant contact details from public WHOIS/RDDS output.
ICANN likewise distinguishes privacy/proxy services from the registration itself. If privacy matters, check the TLD's eligibility and add that cost to the real budget.
A transfer can use the free benefit
If you already own a domain, HostPapa allows an eligible transfer to consume the free registration benefit. That can simplify billing because HostPapa becomes the registrar of record and renews the domain going forward.
But a transfer is not the same as pointing DNS to HostPapa. Your website can use HostPapa hosting while the registrar remains elsewhere.
Transfer timing can block a last-minute move
ICANN says a domain can be ineligible for transfer during the first 60 days after registration, within 60 days of a prior transfer, or while certain locks apply. Namecheap's independent transfer guide describes the same practical prerequisites: unlock the domain, obtain the Auth/EPP code and confirm eligibility.
If you plan to leave later, do not wait until the final week before expiration to discover a transfer lock.
Cancelling hosting does not erase the domain bill
HostPapa's free-domain policy says cancelling the hosting account during the first term can trigger a non-refundable domain fee equal to the then-current domain price.
The domain and hosting are separate services. You may cancel hosting while retaining or transferring the domain, but its registrar status, renewal date and transfer eligibility still need to be managed.
Buying decision
HostPapa Essentials is a good fit if you value getting one domain registration or transfer covered for the first year and are comfortable budgeting the domain separately afterward. It is a weaker fit if you expected lifetime-free registration or included WHOIS privacy.
Before checkout, decide whether you are registering a new domain or transferring an existing one, check the TLD's renewal price, add Domain Privacy if needed, and save the domain expiration date independently from the hosting renewal date.
