TOOLNAVIA / BUYING GUIDE

Cloudways Micro vs GreenGeeks Pro: $132 or $59.40 First Year?

The short answer

Cloudways Flexible and GreenGeeks Pro can both host multiple websites, but the budget model is almost the opposite. Cloudways currently shows a **US$11/month** DigitalOcean Premium Micro option with 2GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50GB storage and 2TB transfer. GreenGeeks Pro shows **US$4.95/month prepaid for 12 months**, then **US$18.95/month renewal**, with unlimited websites, 50GB web space and unmetered traffic.

That makes the first-year headline **US$132 for Cloudways** if the server runs all year, versus **US$59.40 for GreenGeeks Pro** before tax. But year two reverses the fixed-price picture: GreenGeeks' displayed renewal is **US$227.40/year**, while Cloudways' server cap remains US$132 before required off-site backup storage and optional add-ons.

Quick verdict

Choose **GreenGeeks Pro** if you want a conventional cPanel-style shared-hosting bundle, a low first-year prepaid bill, included web-hosting conveniences and several modest sites under one account.

Choose **Cloudways Flexible Micro** if you prefer a managed cloud server with explicit 2GB/1-vCPU resources, hourly metering, developer-oriented controls and the ability to delete the server to stop future server charges.

Neither is automatically “faster.” Shared hosting and a managed cloud VM expose different resource boundaries, and this article does not substitute plan specs for a controlled benchmark.

First year and renewal tell different stories

GreenGeeks Pro's current offer is US$4.95/month for a 12-month prepayment, so the arithmetic first invoice is US$59.40 before extras and tax. Its page states renewal at US$18.95/month, which is US$227.40 for a full renewal year if that rate remains.

Cloudways Flexible uses postpaid usage billing. The current Micro display is US$11/month with an hourly figure of US$0.0357. A full 12 months at the monthly cap is US$132. Partial-month usage can be lower, but a DigitalOcean server that is merely stopped can still be billed; to stop the server charge you must delete the billable resource.

The decision is therefore not “$4.95 versus $11 forever.” It is **cheap prepaid acquisition with a large renewal step** versus **higher first-year server cost with pay-as-you-go exit flexibility**.

Backup costs change the Cloudways invoice

Cloudways Flexible requires off-site backups and currently charges **US$0.033 per GB** of backup storage, rounded in US$0.50 increments. If your retained backup set averages 50GB, the raw arithmetic is US$1.65/month before rounding behavior and usage changes. Backup cost rises with changed data and retention.

That does not make Cloudways expensive by itself, but it means US$11 is not a universal all-in invoice. Email, DNS, premium support, security or other add-ons can be separate depending on what you enable.

GreenGeeks handles backups differently. It aims to keep about 30 recovery sets, and Pro customers can access system backups for restores. GreenGeeks still tells customers not to treat those copies as their sole archival plan. User-generated backups stored in the account are normally purged rather than kept as a long-term repository.

“Unlimited websites” still has a shared-account boundary

Both current pages can say unlimited websites, but the meanings differ. Cloudways gives a defined server envelope—2GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50GB storage and 2TB transfer—so every app shares that server.

GreenGeeks Pro gives 50GB web space and unmetered traffic on shared hosting. Website count does not erase account-level CPU, memory, inode, process or storage constraints. If ten sites are tiny, the topology can work well. If two sites are resource-heavy, “unlimited” does not guarantee headroom.

This matters more than counting domains. Inventory peak PHP workers, database load, media growth and backup size before migrating several production sites.

Backup ownership is a practical tie-breaker

GreenGeeks lets accounts under 10GB generate a full cPanel backup. Above that threshold, its help article says you can create your own file/database copies or request a generated full backup for US$5.

Cloudways' off-site system is built into the server workflow, but billing scales with stored backup data. In either case, a business-critical site should keep an independently controlled copy and test a restore. Retention badges and backup counts do not prove that your recovery procedure works.

Exit and cancellation are not symmetric

GreenGeeks advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee on the Pro plan page, subject to its terms and exclusions. Cloudways instead emphasizes no long-term contract and usage-based billing.

For Cloudways, safe exit means exporting data, deleting servers, disabling paid add-ons and then closing the account. Cancellation is permanent and a final invoice may still cover usage already consumed.

Independent comparisons consistently identify this as a real buyer choice: conventional shared hosting versus managed cloud flexibility. Their scores and performance claims are not used here because exact current price and billing rules come from the providers.

Checkout checklist

For **Cloudways**, verify the exact Micro infrastructure, US$11 cap, hourly rate, region, backup storage estimate, paid add-ons and what must be deleted to stop billing.

For **GreenGeeks**, verify Pro's 12-month prepayment, US$18.95 renewal, 50GB space, site/account resource limits, backup access, domain conditions and refund exclusions.

**Bottom line:** GreenGeeks Pro is the cheaper first-year bundle. Cloudways Micro is the more flexible metered server model. The winner depends on whether you value a low promotional prepayment or explicit cloud resources and easier month-to-month exit.
