Verdict
systeme.io Startup is easiest to justify when the permanent Free plan's capacity limits—not its core tool set—start blocking real work. The current canonical pricing page lists Startup at $17/month, while the current annual view lists $170/year, effectively giving two months free versus twelve monthly payments. Free already includes 2,000 contacts, three sales funnels, unlimited email sends, file storage, one workflow, and one custom domain, so paying early is often unnecessary.
The bigger buying boundary is less obvious: the Free plan also has a $10,000 lifetime sales-revenue cap, and paid plans can be automatically upgraded if usage stays above their limits after a three-day warning.
Free is a real operating plan
systeme.io Free currently costs $0, requires no credit card, and does not expire. The current pricing table includes up to 2,000 contacts, three funnels, one automation rule, one workflow, one custom domain, one website, unlimited email sends, unlimited file storage, and 0% systeme.io transaction fees. Payment processors can still charge their own fees.
Startup mainly expands capacity: 5,000 contacts, 10 sales funnels, 10 automation rules, five workflows, three custom domains, and 10 email campaigns on the current comparison. If your Free account is still comfortably below those limits, upgrading only to “look more professional” may not change the workflow enough to justify a subscription.
Two different rules can force an upgrade
The current terms add a separate Free-plan limit that is easy to miss: Free accounts are capped at $10,000 in lifetime sales revenue, excluding affiliate commissions. When the account reaches that amount, systeme.io sends an email and gives three days to move to a paid plan. If you do not upgrade, payment pages stop accepting new sales. The Free account is not silently upgraded or charged under this rule.
Paid plans work differently. If a paid account exceeds limits such as contacts, funnels, or courses, systeme.io sends an email and gives three days to reduce usage. If usage is still above the plan limit after that window, the subscription can be automatically upgraded to the appropriate plan and billed at the higher price for the remainder of the subscription period.
That means contact and funnel growth are billing controls, not only feature limits. Before paying annually for Startup, estimate whether you are likely to stay under 5,000 contacts and the other Startup caps for the full year.
$17 monthly or $170 annually
At the current canonical pricing, Startup is $17/month. The official annual pricing view lists $170/year. Twelve unchanged monthly payments would total $204, so annual billing saves $34 at today's displayed rates and works out to about $14.17/month.
Annual billing is more attractive after the workflow is proven. Monthly billing costs more over a full year but creates a smaller commitment if your contact count, funnel requirements, or tool choice may change.
There is one current documentation conflict worth noting: some older alternate systeme.io pricing routes still display Startup at $27/month. The current canonical pricing page and newer official pricing/affiliate surfaces show $17/month and $170/year, so this guide uses those current references. Verify the live checkout before paying.
Cancellation is not a refund
systeme.io's current terms state that subscription plans are non-refundable. The cancellation flow says cancellation takes effect at the next expiration/payment date, so access continues through the paid period.
The current pricing FAQ says a canceled paid account can fall back to Free if it fits the Free limits. If more than 2,000 contacts remain, contacts above the Free limit can be archived rather than deleted until a paid plan is reactivated.
For market context, MailerLite's current 2026 Free plan is limited to 250 active subscribers and 2,500 monthly emails, while Comfort starts around $12/month. Brevo Free allows 300 emails/day; Starter starts at $9/month and Standard at $18/month. HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter has a regular $20/month/seat reference with 1,000 marketing contacts, while GetResponse Starter currently lists $19/month for 1,000 contacts. These are price-and-scope references, not deliverability or conversion rankings.
Next step
Stay on Free while its contact, funnel, automation, and $10,000 lifetime-sales limits fit. Choose Startup when you need the higher capacity or must move beyond the Free sales cap. Use monthly billing first if the workload is uncertain; use $170 annual billing once you know you can stay inside Startup's limits for the year.
