1. The decision in one minute
MailerLite currently offers Comfort on monthly or annual billing. Its official billing guide says annual billing receives a 10% discount and renews automatically. At the displayed 500-subscriber starting price, $12 paid monthly is $144 over twelve months, while a 10% annual discount implies $129.60, a nominal $14.40 saving before tax. That arithmetic is useful only if the subscriber tier, currency, tax treatment and discount remain the same at checkout.
Choose monthly first when list growth, sending volume or product fit is still uncertain. Choose annual only when the account has already survived a real campaign cycle, the expected subscriber tier is stable and the business can tolerate paying for twelve months up front. The real trade-off is not “10% good or bad”; it is $14.40 of entry-tier saving versus less flexibility, automatic renewal and generally non-refundable unused time.
2. Calculate the saving at your actual tier
Start with the price shown inside the account, not a review’s example. MailerLite prices by subscriber tier and sending usage. The $12 monthly and $10.80 annual-equivalent figures describe the current 500-subscriber starting tier, not every account. Independent pricing guides repeat those entry figures, but official checkout remains authoritative.
Use this worksheet: monthly quote × 12 = annual monthly-cost baseline; subtract the annual checkout total; then add tax, currency conversion and any expected tier increase. For the starting example, $12 × 12 = $144 and $144 − $129.60 = $14.40. If a team expects rapid list growth, the more important number may be the prorated annual upgrade charge rather than the initial discount.
Do not stack a nonprofit, promotional or coupon assumption onto the 10% calculation unless the live checkout explicitly allows it. MailerLite’s billing help says discounts may have separate rules, and the pricing page notes that multiple discounts generally cannot be stacked.
3. Annual billing does not freeze subscriber costs
An annual plan is a prepaid twelve-month term, but the chosen subscriber allowance is not a permanent ceiling. MailerLite says that if subscriber or sent-email usage rises above the annual limit, the default payment method can be charged a prorated amount based on the new annual cost and the time remaining. The renewal can then use the updated subscriber count.
That means annual billing reduces the base rate; it does not eliminate growth risk. Before prepaying, model three cases: the current tier for twelve months, one tier increase halfway through the term, and an aggressive-growth case. Keep the billing owner and payment method current, and set calendar reminders before campaigns that could push the list across a tier boundary.
Monthly billing carries less prepaid exposure, but it can still auto-upgrade when usage exceeds the selected tier. Monthly is therefore a flexibility choice, not a protection from usage-based price increases.
4. Switching, cancellation and refunds have different clocks
Moving from monthly to annual takes effect after checkout. MailerLite says the annual cost considers active subscribers and time left in the monthly cycle. Switching from a higher annual plan to a lower monthly plan is described in the Help Center as taking effect at the end of the annual term, while a move to a higher monthly plan may apply immediately with unused credit considered.
There is an important source conflict. The Help Center describes a lower monthly plan at annual expiry, while the current Terms of Use may limit annual-to-monthly switching to the same or a higher monthly plan. Because contract version, legacy status and account eligibility can change the outcome, do not buy annual on the assumption that any lower monthly tier will automatically be available. Confirm the exact option in Plan and billing or with MailerLite support before relying on it.
Canceling stops the next renewal; it does not normally refund the unused part of the current term. MailerLite’s refund policy says unused or partially used monthly or annual plans, forgotten cancellations and wrong-plan purchases are generally not refundable. Limited legal withdrawal rights or discretionary exceptions may apply only under their stated conditions.
5. A safer purchase checklist
1. Run at least one monthly billing cycle and one representative campaign before prepaying. 2. Record the live monthly and annual checkout totals for the actual subscriber tier. 3. Calculate the annual saving after tax and currency conversion. 4. Model a mid-year subscriber-tier increase and the resulting prorated charge. 5. Verify whether a future annual-to-monthly downgrade is offered for this account and contract. 6. Save the invoice, renewal date and cancellation reminder in a shared calendar. 7. Review the list and sending forecast thirty days before renewal. 8. Cancel auto-renewal before the deadline if the service no longer fits; do not assume cancellation creates a refund.
External reviews mostly repeat the 10% headline. The stronger buying decision is operational: annual works best for a stable list and proven workflow; monthly is safer during evaluation, migration or uncertain growth.
6. Verdict and affiliate disclosure
For a stable 500-subscriber account, the current starting-price example saves about $14.40 per year before tax, but the commitment can cost more if the plan is wrong, the list grows unexpectedly or the team forgets renewal. Start monthly when uncertainty is worth more than 10%; switch to annual only after verifying the account-specific quote, renewal date and downgrade path.
