GreenGeeks Lite 300% Energy Match: What Are You Buying?

The short answer

**Quick answer:** GreenGeeks Lite's “300% renewable energy match” is an annual accounting claim backed by renewable energy certificates, not a promise that one server physically receives 300% renewable electricity every hour. GreenGeeks says it reports the energy used for its hosting servers and buys renewable attributes equal to three times that amount through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. It also funds one tree per hosting account, but tree planting is a separate program.

That can be a meaningful tie-breaker. It should not override the ordinary hosting decision: Lite currently costs **$2.95/month for a prepaid 12-month term ($35.40 before tax and add-ons)** and renews at **$13.95/month for 12 months ($167.40)**. The $132 annual step-up matters more to most buyers than the environmental label.

Annual REC matching does not prove hourly/location-matched physical supply or a negative website footprint.

What “300%” actually measures

The cleanest reading is a four-step ledger:

1. GreenGeeks estimates the annual electricity used within its stated hosting-server boundary. 2. It reports that quantity to its renewable-energy partner. 3. Renewable energy certificates, or equivalent renewable attributes, are purchased and retired through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation. 4. The claimed quantity is three times the reported server-energy use.

A renewable energy certificate represents environmental attributes associated with renewable generation. It does not reroute a particular electron to your rack, and annual matching does not prove that the data center was supplied with renewable electricity in the same location and hour. GreenGeeks' own explainer makes this distinction and says facility-wide or hourly claims would need additional records.

So the accurate buyer-facing phrase is **“300% annual renewable-energy-certificate match for the stated server-energy boundary.”** Avoid turning it into “the server runs on 300% renewable power” or “your site has a negative carbon footprint.” Those stronger claims are not established by the material reviewed here.

The EPA badge is context, not a product endorsement

GreenGeeks says it has been an EPA Green Power Partner since 2009. EPA's current partner page says the program viewer contains current partners, but also says the information is self-reported and that EPA does not endorse a partner's products or services.

The current EPA viewer exposed its downloadable records as a spreadsheet that our text research path could not independently parse for the individual GreenGeeks row. We therefore treat the partnership and the reported renewable volume as a provider claim repeated by independent reviewers—not as an independently audited performance guarantee. This limitation is more honest than converting a program badge into a quality score.

**Tree planting is separate from the energy match.**

GreenGeeks also says it plants one tree for every hosting account. That is easy to understand, but it is not the evidence for the 300% percentage. The REC purchase supports the matching claim; the tree program is a separate contribution.

Do not add the two together into one invented carbon total. A buyer who needs formal emissions reporting should request the current certificate, reporting year, instrument type, retirement evidence and exact organizational boundary. Marketing copy alone is not enough for an ESG audit.

The hosting plan still has to work

Lite is the entry shared-hosting plan. The current pricing page lists one website, 25GB of storage and unmetered transfer. “Unmetered” is not the same as unlimited compute; normal acceptable-use and resource controls still apply.

The current cost path is:

- **First term:** $2.95 × 12 = **$35.40** before tax and optional extras. - **Renewal:** $13.95 × 12 = **$167.40** before tax and optional extras. - **Increase:** **$132.00 per year**, or about **4.73×** the introductory monthly rate.

TechRadar's review still displays a lower renewal figure than the current official page. Because hosting prices change, this guide uses the official $13.95 figure checked on October 26, 2026 and flags the review figure as stale rather than averaging the two.

That renewal gap is a practical test of intent. If you would reject Lite at $167.40 per year, the first-year green positioning should not persuade you to ignore the exit decision. Calendar the renewal date and compare alternatives before the introductory term ends.

How much weight should sustainability get?

Use a three-gate decision:

1. **Fit gate:** one site, 25GB and the shared-hosting resource model must be sufficient. 2. **Cost gate:** the first-term and renewal totals must fit the budget without assuming another promotion. 3. **Evidence gate:** the annual REC approach must match what you mean by “green hosting.”

If all three pass, the 300% match can be a legitimate differentiator. If the plan fails on performance, limits, support or renewal cost, choose a better-fitting host and reduce impact elsewhere.

Tom's Guide and TechRadar both recognize the environmental positioning, yet their buying coverage still considers storage, support, performance and renewal. Elegant Themes reached a similar eco-hosting frame, but its 2023 date makes it context rather than current price authority. That is the right balance: sustainability belongs inside the scorecard, not above it.

Hosting is not the whole website footprint

A lighter site can reduce transferred bytes and device work regardless of host. WIRED's reporting highlights image weight, page size and font choices as additional contributors.

Pair the host decision with measurable site work:

- resize and compress raster images; - use SVG for simple diagrams and icons; - remove unused scripts and trackers; - cache static assets; - limit autoplay media and heavyweight font files; - measure page weight over time.

This is also why a REC-backed hosting claim should not be marketed as a complete carbon solution. The host controls only part of the system.

Who should buy—and who should not

**Buy Lite** if you run one modest site, can work within 25GB, accept the $167.40 renewal baseline and value an annual REC match as a transparent tie-breaker.

**Keep comparing** if you need multiple sites, dedicated resources, location- and hour-matched electricity evidence, independently audited product-level emissions, or a lower long-term renewal cost.

For procurement or sustainability reporting, ask GreenGeeks for the latest certificate and record: reporting period, energy boundary, kWh matched, supplier, instrument type and retirement status. Save that evidence with the invoice.

Checkout checklist

- Confirm the checkout still shows Lite at $2.95 for 12 months. - Record the $13.95 monthly renewal and its billing term. - Verify one-site and 25GB limits. - Download the current renewable-energy certificate if the claim affects procurement. - Record whether the match is annual, the covered boundary and the supplier. - Treat tree planting as a separate program. - Set a renewal reminder at least 30 days before the term ends. - Reduce page weight after launch.

**Bottom line:** GreenGeeks' 300% claim is most defensible as annual REC accounting for a defined energy boundary. It is useful when the hosting plan already fits; it is not a substitute for plan economics, performance evidence or precise emissions reporting.
