What it includes
LibreOffice is a free, open-source office suite. Writer handles documents, Calc handles spreadsheets and Impress handles presentations. Other included applications support drawing, databases and mathematical formulas.
Who should evaluate it
Start with a routine document or spreadsheet that you actually need to deliver. Check layout, formulas and the export format with the person receiving it. A successful basic example is more useful than a long feature checklist.
What to compare
Compare file exchange, learning time and collaboration requirements. A free desktop suite may fit independent work; a team may also need a shared editing service. Include any training or migration time in your decision.
