What it does

Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor and recorder. It is a starting point for exploring computer-based audio work.

Try a real task first

Before committing to a long project, record a short voice clip with the microphone you intend to use. Practice removing an unwanted section and exporting a copy. Keep the original recording separate from the working project.

How to judge the fit

Consider recording setup, editing effort and the format your client or platform expects. Noise and poor microphone placement are worth addressing before software shopping. We have not measured audio quality or performance for this overview.
