Write a brief before shopping
Describe the finished deliverable, file format, deadline and acceptance criteria. For a logo, say whether you need editable source files and where it will be used. For a website, identify the pages and functions you need.
Count your time as well as the price
Compare a software plan plus learning and revision time with a service quote that includes the same output. A one-off job may have different economics from a task you repeat every week.
Check the service scope
Read the included revisions, delivery files, milestones and usage rights. Ask for relevant examples and agree what counts as complete. A low starting price may describe a smaller scope than your project.
Choose a manageable first step
Use software when you want continuing control and can learn the workflow. Consider a specialist when expertise, timing or a defined deliverable matters more. Keep copies of the final files and document how to maintain them.
